Caption: Umbilical cord stem cells. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of two stem cells taken from umbilical cord blood. These stem cells are known as multipotential stem cells because they undergo differentiation to form the precursors to all of the body's specialised blood cells. Stem cells develop by a process known as haemopoiesis into either red blood cells, or one of three types of white blood cells which make up the immune system. By extracting stem cells from the umbilical cord, scientists may culture blood cells of the immune system necessary to fight infection or cancer. Magnification: unknown.
