This is a blastocyst, a hollow ball of embryonic stem cells that forms at an early stage of devel- opment. Stem cells are the precursors from which all the body's specialized cells develop. Here, they were made by nuclear transfer, the removal of genetic material from an egg and its replacement with an adult cell nucleus. Stem cells made from a patient's cell nucleus could be used for therapeu- tic cloning, the creation of personalized tissues to replace diseased body parts.
