Stem cells. Stem cells on glass slides in a laboratory. Stem cells are able to differentiate into any of the cell types in the body. The type of cell they mature into depends upon the biochemical signals received by the immature cells. Stem cells are a potential source of cells to repair damaged tissues in diseases such as Parkinson's and insulin-dependent diabetes. They could also be used to grow organs for transplant that would not be rejected by the body. Research using embryonic stem cells is controversial as it requires the destruction of an embryo.
