Caption: Muscle cell formation. Light micrograph of the formation of muscle fibres (green), due to stem cells forming new muscle cells. Stem cells are cells that differentiate to form a range of different tissues. The most potent stem cells are found in embryos, but stem cells are also found in some adult tissues. Stem cells can be cultured to form new muscle cells, and these cells can be injected into patients to treat muscle disorders. This work was done in 2001 at the Stem Cells Research Institute (SCRI) in Milan, Italy.
