Adult stem cell research. Images and graphs from cell screening methods being used in research into adult stem cells. Stem cells are cells that differentiate to form the range of different tissues found in the human body. Adult stem cells are rarer and less potent than those found in embryos. Cell screening methods are used to enrich samples of adult stem cells to allow them to be studied. Laser cytometry can identify adult stem cells (upper right), and red blood cells (lower centre) that develop from adult stem cells in bone marrow. Cell distribution graphs (left) separate cell types by size and other properties. Stem cells are being studied as treatments for a wide range of disorders. Photographed in France.
