Caption: Mitosis of HeLa cells. Confocal light micrograph of HeLa cells during mitosis (nuclear division). Mitosis is the formation of two daughter nuclei from one parent nucleus. The cells at the top and in the middle are in interphase, the stage between divisions. The cells on the left and at the bottom are in metaphase, where the chromosomes (pink) are lined up along the centre of the cell. The yellow structures are microtubules, part of the cell's cytoskeleton. Along with actin filaments, microtubules separate the chromosomes during mitosis. Magnification: x600 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
