Caption: Animal cell. Coloured transmission electron micro- graph (TEM) of a section through a mammalian cell. Taking up most of the cell is the nucleus (pink), where genes are stored in the form of chromosomes. The dark zone (brown) in the nucleus is the nucleolus. This is the most active part of the nucleus, and contains unravelled chromosomes involved in making protein-manufacturing bodies called ribosomes. Outside the nucleus is the cell cytoplasm (green). The brown bodies in the top of the cell are mitochondria. These supply energy and are the respiratory centres of the cell. The cell is surrounded by a cell membrane. Magnification: x4,800 at 6x7cm size. x16,000 at 10x8"
