Cellular structure. Artwork of a section through a cell, showing the internal structures. The cell is the microscopic structural and functional unit of most living organisms. It is bounded by the cell membrane. In eukaryotic cells a distinct nucleus exists (upper right, round). This contains the DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) that is the genetic basis of life. The folded endoplasmic reticulum (ER) is where protein synthesis and other metabolic reactions occur. Energy is generated in the mitochondria (one at centre left, oval). Parts of the membrane are seen pinching off (lower left and far left) during endocytosis, the process of engulfing extra-cellular material.
