Caption: Transmission electron micrograph of dark-staining peroxisomes, formerly known as microbodies, taken from a normal rat liver cell. This membrane-bound cellular organelle contains enzymes which are responsible for producing and degrading peroxides. The most prevalent peroxisomal enzyme is often catalase, which degrades hydrogen peroxide to water and oxygen. The function of peroxisomes is unclear, but they are more abundant in cells associated with cholestrol metabolism & synthesis of steroids. Visible also in the cytoplasm are mitochondria (light ovals) involved in respiration & rough endoplasmic reticulum (threadlike) along which protein synthesis occurs.
