Caption: False-colour transmission electron micrograph of part of a pancreatic cell, showing rough endoplasmic reticulum (yellow & green parallel, linear structures) and part of the cell's nucleus (upper left). The endoplasmic reticulum (ER) is a complicated system of membranes which forms a network of flattened cisternae (cavities) through- out the cytoplasm. These function as reservoirs and channels for the storage and transport of proteins and lipids. Rough ER is coated in tiny protein-synthesising particles known as ribosomes, and is, in general, responsible for the synthesis of proteins destined for secretion by the cell. Mag: x14,000 at 6x7cm, x7,000 at 35mm size.
