Caption: Illustration showing the structural relationship between the endoplasmic reticulum (ER, pink) and nucleus (centre, spherical, with two nucleoli). The ER is a network of paired membranes throughout the cytoplasm. It is continuous with the nucleus (at lower right) and may connect with adjacent cells through junctions known as plasmodesmata, which relates to its importance in the transport of materials within and out of the cell. The ER may bear ribosomes (red spheres, sites of protein synthesis) on its surface (rough ER); other regions are devoid of ribosomes (smooth ER). Also shown are mitochondria (green, cigar-shaped), and the Golgi Body (yellow, bottom).
