Caption: Cell organelles. False-colour transmission electron micrograph of rough endoplasmic reticulum (parallel yellow structures) in a tissue culture cell. The endoplasmic reticulum is a complicated system of membranes which forms a network of flattened cavities, or cisternae, throughout the cytoplasm. These function as reservoirs and channels for the storage and transport of proteins and lipids. Rough endoplasmic reticulum is coated in tiny protein-synthesising particles known as ribosomes and is, in general, responsible for the synthesis of proteins secreted by the cell. The large red bodies are lysosomes. Magnification: x13,000 at 6x4.5cm size.
