Caption: Golgi apparatus. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a Golgi apparatus (or Golgi body) in a human intestinal cell. The Golgi apparatus is seen here as a horseshoe-shaped structure of membranes and round vesicles (blue) amongst the cell's other organelles. The Golgi apparatus is usually located close to the cell nucleus and acts as a storage space for lipids and proteins produced by the cell. It contains a collection of flattened membrane-bound cisternae resembling a stack of plates. Vesicles emerging from these cisternae transport proteins and lipids around the cell. Magnification: x22,500 at 6x7cm size. x75,000 at 8x10".
