Caption: Endoplasmic reticulum. Artwork of the endoplasmic reticulum (ER), a membranous structure that occurs in cells. The cell nucleus (with black strands) is at top centre. Rough ER has ribosomes (black dots) on its surface where protein synthesis occurs. Smooth ER lacks ribosomes and synthesises fatty material. The black nuclear strands are the chromosomes that contain the genetic material DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid). This sectioned view also shows some of the surface detail of the nucleus, such as the nuclear pores (black/white, upper left) that allow passage of material in and out of the nucleus. It is the nuclear DNA that mediates the protein synthesis.
