Caption: Gram-positive bacterial cell wall, artwork. This sectioned cell wall separates the interior of the cell (pink, bottom) from the outside (black). The horizontal layers include a plasma membrane (lower centre) containing transmembrane proteins (green). Above this is a thick peptidoglycan layer that is held together by teichoic acids (vertical green chains). The outer surface is sometimes a protein lattice called the S-layer (green spheres). This is termed a Gram-positive cell wall because the thick layer of peptidoglycan retains the Gram stain that helps identify microbial life.
