Caption: Ion channel. Molecular model of an ion channel formed by a bundle of five alamethicin molecules (light blue) surrounded by water molecules (red and white). Ion channels are found in cell membranes, and allow the passage of ions between the outside and inside of a cell. This model shows a 5-helix form of alamethicin (C92.H150.N22.O25), a peptide that can form helical ion channels and spontaneously insert into biological membranes. The atoms (tubes) are: carbon (light blue), nitrogen (dark blue), oxygen (red), and hydrogen (white). Not all the hydrogen atoms are shown.
