Caption: Rough endoplasmic reticulum. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of rough endoplasmic reticulum (RER, blue), showing long membrane-bound vesicles (pink) bearing ribosomes (black dots) on the outer surface. The membrane of RER is continuous with the outer layer of the nuclear membrane (bottom edge, dark grey). The function of RER is to assemble amino acids into peptide chains which, with further processing, form proteins. Rough endoplasmic reticulum is present inside most cells and its abundance is proportional to the level of protein synthesis within the cell. Magnification: x25,800 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
