Caption: False-colour transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of cytoplasm of a protozoan Paramecium sp featuring a mitochondrion (centre, the yellow, cigar-shaped organelle). Mitochondria are sites of energy production in the unicellular animal, containing ATP & a variety of enzymes involved in metabolic activity. Each is bounded by a double membrane, the inner one being folded inwards to form projections (cristae - orange lines), which partially compartmentalise the mitochondrion. Magnification: X 17,000 at 35mm size.
