Caption: Mitochondria and endoplasmic reticulum. Coloured high resolution scanning electron micrograph of mitochondria and rough endoplasmic reticulum (RER) in a pancreatic acinar cell. Mitochondria (blue) are the "powerhouses" of the cell. They oxidise sugars and fats to produce energy. RER (yellow) is a network of folded membranes covered with protein synthesizing ribosomes (small dots). At centre and lower left (grey) is the face of a flattened sac of the Golgi apparatus. Golgi is a stack of interconnecting sacs involved in synthesizing biochemicals. The chemicals are packaged and budded off as vesicles (yellow spheres).
