Caption: LIBRARY Mitochondria. Artwork of a group of mitochondria. These are organelles found within most cells which provide the cells with energy. Mitochondria have numerous internal membranes, or cristae (pink), where respiration takes place. They produce energy by oxidising sugars and fats. They have their own DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) and replicate autonomously. This has led to the suggestion that they may have previously been separate cells which developed a symbiotic relationship with the host cell.
