Mitochondria. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a section through a kidney cell showing mitochondria (green). Enzyme- containing lysosomes (red) digest damaged organelles and foreign material. The mitochondria have an outer membrane and an inner membrane thrown into folds called cristae (dark green), where respiration occurs. Mitochondria provide the cell with energy by oxidising sugars and fats. They are found in almost all cells, have their own DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) and replicate autonomously. They are thought to have originated from parasitic bacteria that invaded primitive cells and became symbiotic. Magnification unknown.
