Caption: Mitochondrion. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a sectioned mitochondrion (red and yellow). This structure, found in eukaryotic cells, is the site of energy production. It has two membranes: an outer surrounding membrane and an inner membrane that forms folds called cristae, seen here as red lines. The cristae are the sites of aerobic cell respiration, where sugars and fats are oxidised to produce energy. Parts of other mitochondria are also seen (bottom right corner & bottom left corner). This is a mitochondrion from a fat cell. Specialised mitochondria in some fat cells help generate body heat. Magnification: x80,000 at 6x7cm size.
