Mitochondria. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of sectioned mitochondria from a fat cell. These structures, found in eukaryotic cells, are the sites of energy production. They have two membranes: an outer surrounding membrane and an inner membrane that forms folds (cristae, yellow). Cristae are the sites of aerobic cell respiration, where sugars and fats are oxidised to produce energy. Specialised mitochondria in some fat cells help generate body heat.
