Caption: MODEL RELEASED. Particle accelerator control room. View of the particle accelerator control room at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (Fermi- lab) near Chicago, USA. Bob Mau (centre left), head of operations of the beams divisions, talks to one of the accelerator operators. On the screen between them is a diagram of the particle acceler- ators. Starting with protons in a Cockroft-Walton generator, protons and antiprotons are accelerated through a set of accelerators until they reach an energy of one trillion electronvolts (1 TeV) in the 6.3 km long Tevatron particle collider. Collisions in the Tevatron led to the discovery of the top quark in 1994. Photographed in 1998. Bob Mau is talking to accelerator operator MARY JANOSI (both model released).
