Caption: Polarised light micrograph of processed silk fibres. Silk is a protein secretion from the caterpillar of the Silkworm moth (Bombyx mori). The moths are bred in silk farms, over half of which are in Japan. The caterpillar uses the silk to weave its pupa case. Once this is complete, the moth is killed and the silk fibres are removed. Magnification x400 at 35mm size.
