Caption: Reels of thread. Two reels with aramide (left) and carbon fibre thread wound around them. Aramide is a strong, synthetic material made from mineral oil and is used to make Kevlar fibres. Kevlar is used to make bullet-proof clothing and to reinforce other materials. Carbon fibre is comprised of pure carbon and is made by heat treatment of a special type of acrylic thread. It has four times the strength of an equivalent weight of steel and is widely used to reinforce plastics in aircraft, cars and sports equipment.
