Caption: House dust. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of household dust from Scotland. Fibres from clothing, carpeting and the like are prominent in the image as are dust mites (pink, Glycyphogus domestica). These mites thrive in damp houses, feeding on furniture stuffing and wallpaper paste, as well as household dust. Typically, house dust comprises a mixture of fungal spores, pollen, skin scales, hair, particles of soil and sand, fibres of household coverings and pet animal fur. Many of these substances may provoke an allergic reaction in humans. Magnification unknown.
