Caption: Researcher using a scanning acoustic microscope to examine the structure of a metal component. Scanning acoustic microscopes are used for the non-destructive testing and evaluation of many materials, providing structural information with a resolution of 30 microns. The specimen is immersed in water (left), which acts as a conducting medium for the sound waves. The resulting scan appears on the television screen at right.
