Caption: Electronic nose. A researcher using the NOSE (Neotronics Olfactory Sensing Equipment) to analyse a glass of beer. NOSE uses 12 conductive polymer sensors to produce a 'fingerprint' of the complex vapour, or smell, being tested. The changes in the conductivity of the sensors due to various vapour components is displayed in the form of a polar plot (see computer screen). This may be a direct analysis, or the difference between the sample and a reference 'fingerprint' for the product. Developed by British company Neotronics Technology, NOSE may complement or replace human quality control panels in the food, beverage, fragrance and tobacco industries.
