The device in the technician's hand sends ultrasonic vibrations into the wheel and picks up the signal's reflections which it then displays on the monitor at upper left. Faults, such as cracks, will strongly reflect the ultrasound waves. Ultrasound is a high-frequency sound. It has a frequency of 18-20 thousand cycles per second (kilohertz) and is inaudible to the human ear. It provides a cheap, safe way of examining the insides of components.
