Caption: Egyptian mummy inside its painted cartonnage coffin undergoing a CT (Computed Tomography) scan, showing the circular body scanner at left. CT was used to complement traditional x-ray methods to image several mummies from the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, Massachusetts, USA, without disturbing the coffins and damaging their contents. The examination was performed at the Brigham & Women's Hospital in collaboration with the museum and was aimed at providing an insight into the pathological conditions of the bodies at time of death as well as revealing information on their present condition for purposes of conservation and display in the museum.
