Caption: Egyptian mummy. View of the head of an ancient Egyptian mummy. This mummy is the body of an ancient Egyptian that was embalmed for burial. The Egyptians are believed to have been the first people to practice embalming, in which a dead body is preserved to retard the decaying process. The practice began at around 4000 BC and was thought to be necessary for the soul of the dead person to survive. The body was preserved using substances such as balsam and salt and wound up in cloths. This mummy was being analysed at the Anatomical Pathology Institute in the University of Pisa, Italy.
