Caption: Restoration of Michelangelo's David. 3D computer model for a restoration of Michelangelo's David, a marble statue sculpted by the Italian Renaissance artist Michelangelo. The model shows the centre of gravity of the complete statue (yellow dot) and the statue above the ankles (blue dot), confirming that the weight above the ankles is centred over the right ankle, which needs to be reinforced. The coloured lines show cross-sections through the statue at various heights near the ankles. This statue, one of the world's most celebrated works of art, was sculpted from 1501 to 1504. It is displayed in the Accademia Gallery, Florence, Italy, where this restoration took place in 2003 and 2004, in preparation for the statue's 500th anniversary.
