Caption: Forensic narcotic tests. A selection of vials used by police officers at the scene of a crime to test for illegal narcotics. Each vial is marked with the narcotic it can test for (from left: opiates & amphetamines; cannabis; LSD; and cocaine). During a test the top of the vial is broken off and a sample of the drug is inserted into the vial using a spatula. A positive result will be indicated by the clear crystals inside the vial changing to the colour indicated on the vial. For example, a positive cocaine result on the right vial will turn the crystals blue.
