Caption: Measuring footprints. Forensic scientist using a ruler to measure footprints made from a suspect's shoe. This can be compared with footprints found at a crime scene, and may link the suspect to that crime scene. Footwear evidence can narrow the investigation to a certain make and size of shoe. The shoe size can indicate the size of the person wearing them. Footprints at a crime scene can also indicate direction of movement and the number of people present. Most importantly, scratches and wear on shoes can lead to unique differences in footprints, allowing direct linking of a suspect to a crime scene.
