Caption: Fingerprinting suspect. Roller being used to ink the fingers of a suspect for fingerprinting. The ink is applied to below the first knuckle and round to the edges of the nails because this whole surface is printed onto paper using a rolling motion. This is repeated for the other hand, and sometimes for the whole hands. The ridges on the fingertips form a distinctive pattern that is unique for each person. The fingerprints can be compared to those found at crime scenes, enabling the police to link suspects to a crime.
