Caption: Forensic DNA analysis. Pipette being used during DNA analysis of tissue found at a crime scene. DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) is found in cells, and can be used as a genetic fingerprint to uniquely identify an individual. Modern procedures allow fast processing of samples and amplification of trace amounts of DNA. The results can be entered into databases that carry DNA details of many thousands of criminals and other individuals. DNA evidence is considered conclusive proof that a suspect was at a crime scene. DNA analysis can also help to solve old crimes and identify human remains. Tissues used include blood, saliva, skin and hair.
