Caption: Lords and ladies (Arum maculatum) spathe (green) and spadix (purple). The female flowers occur at the base of the spadix and the male flowers occur above. The male flowers mature before the female flowers to prevent self-pollination. This plant prefers lightly shaded environments such as woodland and hedgerows.
