Caption: MODEL RELEASED. Forensic odour analysis. Police forensic officer using an odour collector on a gun as part of an investigation. This is an STU-100 (a Scent Transfer Unit) that uses a vacuum process to collect the scent onto a sterile gauze pad. Scent spreads through the air as trace molecules given off by an object, and it is these molecules that are captured by the gauze pad. The gauze pad can then be used by trained scent dogs, or chemical detectors, to trace a suspect. Such evidence can also be preserved in a scent bank and used many years later. The STU-100, the world's first Scent Transfer Unit, was designed in 1991 by William (Bill) Tolhurst. Photographed in California, USA.
