Caption: 5g electron orbitals, computer model. An electron orbital is a region around an atomic nucleus (not seen) in which one or a pair of electrons is most likely to exist. The 5g orbitals are not populated by electrons in any element known. However, electrons may be raised into these orbitals by excitation, for instance by radiation of the correct wavelength.
