Caption: Compass bearing. Ship's navigation officer takes a magnetic compass bearing. The compass is mounted on a pivoted stand. This is because a compass which is not horizontal will give a false reading. The bearing is made by noting the direction from the ship to a landmark. If two or more landmarks are visible then the ship's exact position can be calculated by drawing lines from the landmarks on a map. The ship's location will be at the point where these lines meet.
