Caption: Members of the Aerial Experiment Association in 1907. They are (left to right): J.A.D. McCurty, Lt. Thomas Selfridge, Alexander Graham Bell, Frederick 'Casey' Baldwin, Glenn H.Curtiss. Bell became fascinated by aviation late in life, having earlier invented the telephone. Glenn Curtiss became one of aviation's great pioneers and aircraft manufacturers. One notable member not seen here is Samuel Langley. The group was formed to perform a variety of experiments into the very new science of aeronautics. They used kites as a research tool for testing new aerofoils and control systems. A spin-off from their work on seaplanes was the invention of the hydrofoil boat.
