Caption: Henry Ford and Thomas Edison (in car). Portrait of the American inventors Henry Ford (1863-1947) and Thomas Alva Edison (1847-1931). Edison and Ford were good friends, Ford having worked as Chief Engineer for the Edison Lighting Company. In his spare time, Ford built his first car, in 1896. His 1903 company became one of the earliest and most successful car manufacturers in America. Edison filed 1069 patents on his inventions, which included the electric light bulb, the phonograph (a sound-recording device) and microphones.
