Caption: Ernest Lawrence and Luis Alvarez. Portrait of the US physicists Ernest Orlando Lawrence (1901-1958, left) and Luis Walter Alvarez (1911-1988). Both received the Nobel Prize for Physics. Alvarez's prize (1968) was for his detection, in the 1960s, of the short-lived resonance particles formed in particle accelerators. Lawrence's prize (1939) was for his 1929 invention and use of the cyclotron, an early type of particle accelerator. He used it to make radioactive isotopes and also entirely new elements. Photographed in 1956. ***** NO ADVERTISING USAGE IN CONSUMER OR TRADE MAGAZINES WITHOUT PRIOR WRITTEN APPROVAL *****
