Powell (1903-69) studied at the Cavendish Laboratory in Cambridge before moving to Bristol. Occhialini (1907-93) studied in Florence & then worked at the Cavendish before joining Powell in Bristol in 1945. Powell's team pioneered the use of emulsion techniques to study cosmic ray particles and used them to discover the pion in 1947. Powell won the Nobel prize for physics for this discovery in 1950.
