Ferdinand II of Aragon (1452-1516, far right) the first king of a united Spain and co- ruler with his wife Isabella (1451-1504, centre). Columbus is seen petitioning the king and queen for backing for his expeditions to open a new trade route to the East Indies by sailing westward from Europe. He gained their support in 1492 and led an expedition of three ships (Nina, Pinta and Santa Maria), which arrived in the Bahamas later that year.
