Caption: Fifth Solvay Conference. Scientists at the Fifth Solvay International Conference, Brussels, in 1927. Among those present were Einstein, Marie Curie, de Broglie, Dirac, Schroedinger and Pauli. These conferences were started by the Belgian physicist Ernest Solvay (1838-1922) in 1911. At them, some of the leading thinkers of the day in physics, chemistry and sociology discussed recent advances in their fields. Many of the ideas about quantum mechanics, the atom and cosmology were developed at them.
