Caption: Bohr and Spedding. Niels Bohr (left, 1885-1962) and Frank Spedding (1902-1984). Bohr and Spedding both contributed to the development of the first nuclear bomb. Bohr applied quantum theory to atomic nuclei, and showed that uranium-235 would be the best isotope for fission. Spedding was a chemist who helped to purify the uranium that was used in the first self-sustaining nuclear reaction (carried out by Fermi). Bohr won the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1922 for his work on quantised electron orbitals.
