Caption

Penzias and Wilson (right), US astrophysicists, at Bell Laboratories, New Jersey, USA, standing on a radio antenna. It was this antenna that they had used from 1963-4, unexpectedly discovering the universe's microwave background radiation. This remnant of the 'big bang' origin of the universe was predicted in 1948 by Gamow and Herman. Arno Allan Penzias (born 1933) and Robert Woodrow Wilson (born 1936) had discovered key evidence for the Big Bang. Photographed in 1978, the year they won the Nobel Prize for Physics for this work.
