Caption: Segre and Meitner, nuclear fission pioneers, 1937. Emilio Gino Segre (1905-1989, left), Italian physicist, worked in the early 1930s with Fermi on bombarding uranium with neutrons. Lise Meitner (1878-1968), German nuclear chemist, worked with Otto Hahn, but fled Nazi Germany (she was Jewish) to Sweden in 1938. By 1939, both Hahn and Meitner had discovered nuclear fission. This led to the US Manhattan Project (1942-6), on which Segre worked, which built the first atomic bomb. Photographed in 1937, at the Niels Bohr Institute, Denmark.
